Located in Howard County, Maryland, Columbia is what’s known as a “planned community.” Made up of ten self-contained villages, Columbia was founded under the premise that a city could actually enhance the quality of life for its residents. The community was opened in 1967 with the intention of eliminating those pesky inconveniences associated with subdivisions, not to mention segregation of all kinds—racial, religious and class. While the community was never incorporated, the Columbia Association offers some governance in the form of the management of common areas—functioning as a sort of homeowner association for Columbia’s residents. While the ten villages are completely self-contained, the community centerpiece, for all intents and purposes, is The Mall in Columbia as well as the manmade Lake Kittamaqundi. The different villages give Columbia a small-town look and feel, with each village being comprised of several distinct neighborhoods. Each village has its own schools, shopping centers, recreational facilities, community centers, bike trails or walking paths. A number of the villages have their very own interfaith centers, operated by and serving a variety of area religious congregations. Residential property is plentiful in Columbia, with single family homes, town houses, condominiums and apartments located in each village. While community founder James Rouse never intended for Columbia to be a bedroom community, many residents do commute into Baltimore and Washington for work. That being said, the local economy is strong, with a variety of companies based in and around Columbia—companies such as W.R. Grace and Company, PetMeds, Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Inc, and formerly MaggieMoo’s. Columbia has had the honor of being named by Money Magazine as one of the Top Ten (out of 100) Best Places to Live in the United States several times over the years—an accolade that the community will likely continue to embrace in the future, as plans for expansion and further development come to fruition over the next few years.
