Named after Thomas Fairfax—one of the area’s first European settlers who received some five million acres of land in Northern Virginia from King Charles, the city of Fairfax was originally known as the Town of Providence in the early 19th century. The area where modern day Fairfax sits today was originally settled by farmers coming from Virginia’s Tidewater region. It was officially renamed the Town of Fairfax in 1874, becoming an independent city almost 90 years later in 1961 when it became the City of Fairfax. While the city is full of rich history, like much of the surrounding area, the old courthouse is one of the area’s most historically significant buildings. The building’s design was used as a sort of prototype for many Virginia courthouses built from the early part of the 19th century, though about 1850. The Fairfax courthouse was used by the Union Army as a military headquarters of sorts during the Civil War. The building would later be used as the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court through 2009, after which point it was made into office space. Another building of historical significance—The Old Town Hall—is still considered to be the social and architectural cornerstone of the City of Fairfax. Now home to the Huddleson Library, as well as the Fairfax Art League the Old Town Hall can be rented out for weddings and other events. Today, the city is considered a part of the greater Washington Metropolitan Area and was named one of the “Top 25 Places to Live Well” by Forbes Magazine. In recent years, Fairfax has undergone significant redevelopment, adding retail and restaurant space as well as residential condominiums. It’s known for its strong public school system, high median salary among other things, making Fairfax a highly sought after community for families looking to settle down away from the hustle and bustle of Washington D.C.
